When you take your dog for a walk and see another person walking their dog, one of a few things probably come to mind (I wonder if the dog is friendly and can play? I hope they keep their distance, I don't know how that dog will act. I'm going to cross the street because my dog will go crazy once he sees that dog.) Don't feel alone, literally every person I have ever met or worked with their dog has said something along these lines. What if I told you there was an easy, fast, and inexpensive solution that would not only overcome any doubts, but also help socialize dogs and build local dog communities?
Allow me to explain, there is a color-coded system that has been developed to represent a dog's needs, and it is as simple as using that color collar/leash or attaching a ribbon/bandanna of that color to a leash in a prominent spot. These different colors will represent things such as if your dog is good with other dogs, up for adoption, or in training. Even if your dog doesn't have any special needs, it is important to be able to determine if other dogs around you might.
This color-coded system allows dogs to speak up for themselves, letting people know what their personality is from a distance. Many of these leashes will have large embroidered writing so there is no confusion on their meaning, and they utilize the bright color to signal to others from a distance. This system will allow people to better socialize their dogs by showing them what dogs are acceptable to interact with in a given situation, making life more enjoyable for dogs and humans alike.
RED - CAUTION
I need space!
ORANGE – NO DOGS
I like people, just not dogs
GREEN – FRIENDLY
I like meeting new friends!
WHITE – DEAF/BLIND
I’m deaf / I’m blind
BRIGHT YELLOW – ADOPTION
I’m looking for a new home!
LIGHT YELLOW – NERVOUS
I’m anxious, give me space
BLUE – TRAINING/SERVICE DOG
I’m learning new things / I’m for work, not play
PURPLE – DO NOT FEED
Please do not feed me
It is important to always ask the dog’s owner if you can touch their pet, regardless of what color the dog may be wearing. Help spread the word about the use of colored collars, leashes, and ribbons; this system will help ensure dogs are better understood, providing them with the space and support they need when out for a walk!
